Evaluation By Chloe Magee

1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I feel my music video is similar to real music videos as it is based on quite a popular genre of music, it uses key features such as text at the start of the music video saying the title of the song and who it’s by. The clothes within the music video relate to the genre of the music by the artists within in wearing clothing items such as black skinnies, the fact they are black represents darkness and emotion which is linked to the genre of rock/metal and is similar to the kinds of clothes worn in rock magazines such as; Kerrang, NME. Another way that my music video is similar to other media texts is that it has a mix of both the band performing at different angles and shots and a storyline, the way it challenges the conventions of real media texts is that the storyline part of the music video isn’t revealed till much later on in the video which is quite different to what’s normally done.My first subsidiary task is similar to other media products as it includes features such as a list of the songs included on the album, a barcode and text to say the bands name and the name of the album. The layout of the album is similar to that of  a real media product as it has the text in front of the image and has the song titles on the back of the CD case. My subsidiary task challenges real media products by not using images of the band on either side of the CD case, they also don’t normally use the same sort of effects that I used on photo shop to distort my image which makes me digipack more unique and distinctive compared to others. My secondary subsidiary task is similar to real life media products as it includes parts of it such as the album title and the name of the band within it, it uses a background that relates to the album title, as well as including images of the band which is what real life media products do as well. The way it challenges conventions of real life media products is the effects used on the advert and the background of it, it isn't similar to other adverts I have seen which will help to make it stand out and catch the readers attention while still linking to the album title.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The texts combine as; a picture of the album is included on the magazine advert and pictures of the band members in the same clothing are used that are shown within the music video, this links the music video to the ancillary tasks. Another way the texts combine is that the music video connotes a rock genre and the ancillary tasks carry this genre on. The differences between the ancillary texts and the main product is that the music video shows a lot of emotion and anger through the camera angles and the story that goes along with the video, yet the magazine advert and digipack do not show this same level of emotion. The shared elements of the main product and ancillary tasks is that they all share the same sort of text, they are all based around the same genre of music and language. One text helps understand the others as when it comes to the main product and ancillary tasks as all the anger, emotions shown within the music video and the story used within it helps you understand why all the metal surfaces and dark colours are used within the ancillary tasks.

3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

My target audience is teenagers and young adults who are interested in rock and metal music. The way I have attempted to target them is by using a band that has members in it within the age of my target audience so that the audience can relate to it more.

Questionnaire
1. How old are you?
2.What gender are you?
3. What genre of music do you like?
4. What do you like about our media project?
5. What do you dislike about our media project?
6. How do you feel our media project is similar to real life media products?
7. How do you feel our media project challenges real life media products?
8. Suggest one improvement for each of our media products?

For the questionnaire I first got every respondent to watch both the music video and look through the ancillary texts and then answer the questions based on their first impressions. From the questionnaire most people said the strongest element of our coursework was; a few respondents who favoured the camera shots used and mentioned the types of shots used within the music video; such as the close-ups of the instruments, our respondents felt that this added more interest to the video so that it wasn't just a music video showing the performance, mixed with a story as it was shown in an interesting way. The weakest part of my coursework that was pointed out by the majority of respondents of the questionnaire was that I filmed some of the music video in college, which respondents said made it look un-professional, and didn’t suit the tone of the music so this is what respondents said they would change, this was an issue as it goes against the codes and conventions of music videos, as music videos are always shot in a location that goes well with the genre of music and looks professional.

4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research planning and evaluation stages?

The hardware I used was a MacBook to import my filming onto and edit the music video and use to Photoshop my images, I used a MacBook as it already has programmes such as; adobe Photoshop and final cut which have been two programs essential for the producing of my coursework. I have learnt how to use more shortcuts on the keypad that helped me to complete certain commands such as when cropping photos on photos and going through footage, this was needed in order to finish my coursework quicker. The software I used was Adobe Photoshop I used this as it has a lot of different tools and I have previous experience using this program but this time round using it I learnt how to use more of the tools. Another program I used was final cut express, before editing my music video I had used this program before to do a practice music video, so using it for the second time was easier, I used final cut as movie maker has less effects and tools within it and final cut was a more professional way to edit my music video and make it look the best I could. While researching for inspiration for my music video and doing audience analyse I used YouTube, this is a website that allows you to watch a huge selection of music video, trailers of films and much more, using YouTube allowed me to view music videos as many times as I wish and pause and play when needed which made my research a lot quicker and easier. I also used blogger to upload my coursework, this is as it is a great digital way to display work and I had already used this last year for my coursework so I was already aware to use I, another reason why I used it was that if I needed opinions for any of my choices within my coursework other people can comment on posts and is a much more efficient way of collecting data from respondents when trying to make choices.

We used the same technologies in the digipack. Using Photoshop on a Mac and using the keyboard and mouse to control the program.

List for video commentary by Harry Lynch-Bowers and Chloe Magee

-have shots of each genre to set up the story.
-having faster cuts to build interest
-also goes with the crescendo
-revealing the metal late in the story, defying music conventions (Rebellious)

Photoshop printscreens by Chloe Magee

Once I had taken a selection of pictures of the famous hand gesture associated with the rock/metal genre, I chose the one that I would be using for the front cover of my digipack, these print screens show the experimentation I carried out on photoshop as the 4th picture shows that with just the writing and no effect on the picture the front of the CD would've looked too plain. I used different effects on the picture to change the picture and see if it worked well with the genre of music Tenacious D are, the last picture shows the effect that I ended up deciding to use that will be used on the back of my digipack as well.
